What Is All Nippon Airways Unaccompanied Minor Policy?

All Nippon Airways (ANA) offers a special service Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) which is called ANA Junior Pilot to provide a safe and comfortable environment to children who are flying alone in the ANA flights. The policy is subtle, and it differs according to the age of the child and his or her route of flight.

Age Requirements and Eligibility

  • Children under 5 years: They are not even allowed to travel alone. The child should go with an adult, who are usually 12 and above.

  • Ages 5 to 11: As per All Nippon Airways Unaccompanied Minor Policy, it is compulsory to provide Unaccompanied Minor service to this age group. The children of this age group may fly unescorted only provided they are booked onto the ANA Junior Pilot program. It is a required service on flights to and from Mexico; this includes children under the age of 13.

  • Ages 12 to 16: Children can fly in without the required UMNR support but parents or guardians can order the ANA Junior Pilot service so that extra help can be provided.

The age limit can differ a bit depending on the destination and route and will be a bit different in case of code shares or flights operated under partner airlines. Hence, ANA advises to specify details when making a reservation.

Booking the UM Service

Booking of unaccompanied minors can not be done online. The guardians have to call the ANA reservation center or their ticket office in order to reserve a flight to an unaccompanied child. When making a booking, the guardian will be required to provide:

  • Complete travel details.

  • Contact details of the person bringing and receiving the child.

  • Any additional support that is needed by the child.

Once a reservation is made a consent and release form must be completed at check in that confirms the drop off and pick up arrangements at each end of the trip.

Services Offered by ANA

ANA makes sure that unaccompanied children are in the company of ground attendants during the entire trip which includes:

  • Check-in assistance: Members of the staff assist the child in the process of check-in and airport security.

  • Escort to the gate: They give the child a representative who accompanies him up to the aircraft.

  • In-flight support: The presence of the UM is communicated to cabin crew, and they observe their comfort/safety carefully.

  • Arrival assistance: Once the plane lands, the ANA personnel greet the child at the aircraft entrance and escort the child recovering the luggage and delivering them to the designated guardian at the other end of the airport.

The child is provided a special UM identification tag, which helps the airline personnel to recognise the child easily.

Fees and Associated Costs

The All Nippon Airways Unaccompanied Minor Fee is around $50-$100, depending on the number of children to take along with, flight routes, and destination. Rates may vary, and parents are expected to confirm them at time of booking.

Conclusion

All Nippon Airways takes seriously the responsibility of transporting unaccompanied minor. ANA also strives to keep children traveling without their parents safe and nurtured at all times, as their absolute safety is achieved through elaborate processes as well as a caring staff. Families that will need to use this service are advised to make arrangements early and obtain all required documentation to make the journey an easy one.
